Bhashani in Karachi: 1970

Bhashani in Karachi: 1970 ..... মওলানা ভাসানী করাচীতে , ১৯৭০ ......

During the election campaign, Maulana Bhashani visited Karachi as part of his tour of West Pakistan. He spoke at the National Press Club. Some of my friends who did not think highly of the intellectual capacity of this slovenly dressed man, went there for fun. They came back completely transformed. They were full of praise for his Urdu, Farsi and Arabic. They were mainly attracted to his stance for the poor and the downtrodden.
He gave a public speech at Federal Area, opposite Lalukhet. I went there with my father. It was just after Maghrib under a shamiana. We were seated about twenty meters from the stage. One by one, young red-shirt leaders from NAP (Wali Khan) kept speaking to fill the time. At last, Maulana Bhashani entered from the back of the stage. He had hardly taken his position when stones started to rain on the audience from all directions. There was a pandemonium. Not knowing what to do, people got up and started to run in every direction. Immediately, the red-shirt volunteers on the stage surrounded the Maulana to protect him from harm. He extended both arms to push them aside, saying, ہٹ جاؤ (move away), then thundered:
آپ لوگ بیٹھ جائیے ۔ ڈرنے کی کوئ بات نہیں ہئے sit down, there is no need to panic. People turned back and started to resume their seats. Then he roared:
يَحْيَىٰ تم غنڈے بھیجتے ہو ۔ غنڈہ تو میں خود ہوں میرے سامنے آکر مقابلہ کرو ۔
Yahya, you send hoodlums. I am myself a hoodlum. Come and fight me face to face. That was nectar to my ears!
